LMCD Assists Special Event Coordinators in the Prevention and Management of Aquatic Invasive Species

Various jurisdictions, including the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Water Patrol (Water Patrol), the municipality in which an event is taking place, as well as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) all issue special event permits that take place on Lake Minnetonka.  The Water Patrol issues their permit on behalf of themselves, as well as the LMCD.  This partnership provides for the Water Patrol to handle all public safety aspects of a special event, while the LMCD addresses the continued need to provide for proper management and prevention of aquatic invasive species (AIS).  Special event AIS management and prevention procedures are addressed by the event coordinator(s); working closely with the LMCD and other established partnerships.  LMCD Code Section 3.09 (Subdivisions 3-9) outlines the efforts involved in assuring all procedures are addressed.  The procedures outlined within the Code, as well as a list of currently infested AIS waters (as of April, 2013) and educational materials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are provided herein.  The LMCD asks all coordinator(s) to please read through the material offered and contact the LMCD for assistance in meeting any pending needs, i.e., the scheduling of the LMCD’s sprayer at no cost, etc.   Please call Executive Director Gregory Nybeck for this assistance, or to answer any of your questions.  He can be reached at 952-745-0789 or gnybeck@lmcd.org.
