Determining Ice-Out on Lake Minnetonka

Ice-out on Lake Minnetonka could break a record this year. While methods throughout Minnesota are not standard for determining lake ice-out dates, Lake Minnetonka is generally declared ice-free when a boat can pass through channels and navigate all portions of the lake. Ice-out on Lake Minnetonka is determined through combined efforts of the Hennepin County Sheriff Office Water Patrol and Freshwater Society. Visit the Freshwater Society webpage for more information Here.  Visit the DNR site for historical ice out dates and as they occur– View DNR Ice Out Website.
