The Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD) has received a significant number of public comments about wakes created by watercraft such as wake surf boats and large cruisers. Some feel these large wakes are creating safety hazards, environmental concerns, nuisances/noise, damaging property, and interfering with other uses of the lake. The LMCD has also received a significant number of public comments from others who feel that boats such as surf boats offer a great outdoor recreational outlet and they have the same right to use the lake as any other watercraft owner. Therefore, we have created a webpage compiling information for people to learn about safety and boat generated wakes, current research, legislation, and educational information surrounding boat wakes. The webpage is Safety & Boat Generated Wakes.
On February 25, 2021, a bill was introduced in the 2021 Minnesota State Legislature regarding wake surfing. If passed, the bill (HF 1606) would establish a state-wide baseline for distances from shore/dock/swimmer/watercraft, and minimum size of bays or waterways for wake surfing. The LMCD will be reviewing the language and legislative activity to determine any impacts and/or responses needed.
