In a press release dated March 20th, 2025, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging everyone to practice extreme caution when heading out onto melting ice. With the rain, warm weather, and wind that spring brings, ice conditions around the state changes rapidly. In some southern areas of the state, the ice has transitioned into open water and boats are appearing on the water already.
Over the past weekend, DNR conservation officers were involved in multiple rescues of people who fell through the ice, along with reports of vehicles going through as well. The DNR emphasizes that late season ice can be dangerous, and even it if appears thick, it does not make it safe, therefore they recommend doubling their standard ice thickness guidelines. They also advise wearing a life jacket, ice picks, going out with a buddy, and to let others know where you will be and when you will return.
